Factory anti-theft systems have been around for over 20 years.One of these early systems, beginning with the1984 Chevrolet Corvette and then the1986 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, was the GM VATS (vehicle anti-theft system).It was the small resistor chip, mounted in black plastic, on the ignition key shank.The vehicle would not start unless that key was in the ignition.

Since then, factory anti-theft systems have become far more electronically sophisticated. Today there are over a dozen different anti-theft systems being used by the vehicle manufacturers. The electronic chip is generally hidden in the plastic head of the ignition key and is not obvious like the original VATS keys were. Factory anti-theft systems are generally noted in your vehicle's owner's manual.
